로이터 통신의 리포터가 아프가니스탄 전쟁 중 미군 특수부대에서 저격수로 활동한 저격수를 인터뷰하며 물었다.
"테러리스트들을 사살하면서 뭘 느꼈나요?"
잠깐 생각한 그 저격수가 대답했다.

전차병과 머피의 법칙
1. Just after you report Redcon 1(Readiness Condition 1 - ready to move out right "now") for your qualification run, you will realize that you desperately need to take a leak. 시험주행 후 '준비 완료' 보고를 하고 나면 꼭 전차 밖으로 나가서 소변을 누고 싶어진다.
2. The fuel truck will run out of fuel just before he gets to your tank. 연료 트럭은 꼭 내 전차에 닿기 전에 기름이 다 떨어진다.
2a. You will run out of fuel before he returns. 그리고 그 트럭이 다시 오기 전에 내 전차 연료가 꼭 떨어진다.
3. Tanks don't float. 전차는 도대체 물에 뜨질 않는다.
4. If a supply sergeant is given a choice between death and going to the field with his unit, he will ask for a few minutes to think it over.? 병참장교에게 자기 부대하고 같이 작전에 나가든가, 아니면 죽든가 선택하라고 하면 '잠깐 생각해볼게요'하고 말한다.
5. Attempting to help recover a mired tank will only result in your tank becoming mired also. 진창에 빠진 전차를 끌어내주려고 하면 꼭 내 전차도 같이 빠진다.
6. The primary purpose of an operations order is to ensure that all blame falls on the line units. 작전명령의 주 목적은 최전방 부대에게 모든 비난이 쏟아지도록 만드는 것이다.

11. When loading the main gun, remember: Pointy end first. 주포 포탄 장전시에는 꼭 기억하라: 뾰족한 쪽이 앞이다.

14. All infantry fighting vehicles don't look alike. 보병전투차는 똑같이 생긴 게 하나도 없다.
15. Shaking trees to your front mean that you are being hunted by helicopters. 당신 앞의 나무가 마구 흔들리고 있다면 그것은 이제 공격헬기가 당신의 전차를 요리할 것이라는 뜻이다.
16. When you are told your engineer support was needed elsewhere, the bridge will be out. 당신이 공병이고, 공병이 필요하다고 어딘가로 불려가면 꼭 교량이 무너진다.
17. The exercise will finish and you'll get back to garrison just after the wash rack (where tanks are cleaned) closes. 훈련 끝나고 기지로 돌아오면 꼭 전차 세차장 폐쇄시간이다.
18. If all else fails, shoot at the muzzle flashes ?the larger ones are the dangerous ones, the smaller ones are infantry. 전장에서 적들 분간이 제대로 안 되면, 머즐플래시를 향해 쏴라. 클 수록 위험한 것이고, 작은 것들은 보병일 뿐이다.
18a. The infantry muzzle flashes you ignore are covering an anti-tank team setting up. 그런데 보병이라고 무시한 축들은 꼭 대전차화기팀과 같이 다닌다.
19. XO 수학: 장갑차량 3대 + 연료 없음 + 고장 2대 = 작전준비 100%
20. Close air support is safest from far away. 근접항공지원은 멀리서 할 수록 안전하다.
21. Proving that three feet of frontal armor protection will defend against any threat is probably best demonstrated on someone else's track. 75mm 장갑판을 뚫을 수 있을지 궁금하다면 다른 차량 캐터필러에 쏴 보라.
22. Hearing an Aw, shit soon after an on-the-waaay! means you're probably not getting that promotion. '앗싸!' 뒤에 '아 젠장'이라는 소리가 들린다면 당신은 진급대상 제외라는 뜻이다.
23. Tanks are very easy to see unless you뭨e dismounted and they're backing up. 전차란 물건은 당신이 타고 있지 않고 적은 타고 있을 때를 빼면 참 잘 보이는 물건이다.
24. The one time you skip the firing circuit test is when you have the misfire. 귀찮아서 발사 테스트를 빼먹으면 꼭 포탄이 불발이다.
25. GUNNER, SABOT, SNIPER(firing an anti-tank shell at a sniper) is not an appropriate use of ammunition. 저격수에게 대전차탄을 쏘는 건 탄약의 올바른 사용법이 아님을 명심해라.
26. It is cruel to tell NBC types Damn, that Fox (NATO chemical/biological/nuclear weapons detection vehicle) looks like a BMP (Russian made armored vehicle used by many countries, like Iraq)!? particularly when live rounds are being issued. 꼭 실탄을 장전하고 나면 NATO의 NBC(핵, 생물학, 화학전 차량)차량이 러시아제 BMP 보병전투차로 보인다.
27. Unsecured turrets will only swing freely mid-way through a rail tunnel. 고정 안 해놓은 포신은 꼭 열차 터널에만 들어가면 돌아간다.
28. When doing a gunnery, the tank is always operational until you get to the ready line. 내 전차는 포격중에는 내 차례가 돌아오기 전까지만 잘 굴러간다.
당신이 전투에 나갔다면 명심할 것들
You are not Superman. 당신은 절대 슈퍼맨이 아니다.
Recoilless rifles aren't. 무반동포라고? 자빠졌네.
Suppressive fire won't. 제압사격이라고? 퍽이나.
Never share a foxhole with anyone braver than you. 당신보다 용감한 사람하고는 절대 엄폐호를 공유하지 마라.
Always keep in mind that your weapon was made by the lowest bidder. 당신이 들고 있는 총은 최저가입찰 생산자가 만들었다는 사실을 잊지 마라.
If your attack is going well, it's an ambush. 공격이 잘 진행되고 있다면 매복이 있다는 뜻이다.
If you can't remember . . . the claymore is probably pointed at you. 클레이모어를 설치할 때 제대로 안 봤다면 십중팔구 적 쪽이 아니라 내 쪽으로 설치해놨다.
All five second grenade fuses are three seconds. 모든 5초짜리 시한신관은 3초에 터진다.
Try to look unimportant. The enemy may be low on ammo. 별로 안 중요해 보여야 한다. 그럼 적이 탄약을 아껴줄 수도 있다.
The easy way is always mined. 좀 쉬워 보이는 길에는 언제나 지뢰가 깔려 있다.
Teamwork is essential. It gives the enemy other people to shoot at. 팀웍은 매우 중요하다. 적이 나 대신 다른 사람을 쏠 테니까.
If the enemy is in range, so are you. 적이 사거리에 들어와 있다면 당신도 마찬가지임을 명심하라.
Make it too tough for the enemy to get in ... and you can't get out. 적이 진입하기 힘들게 장애물을 깔아놓으면 꼭 내가 나가기도 힘들다.
Tracers work both ways. 예광탄은 쏘는 놈이나 맞는 놈이나 다 보인다.
The only thing more accurate than incoming enemy fire is incoming friendly fire. 적의 사격보다 더 정확한 건 아군의 오인사격이다.
Radios will fail as soon as you need something desperately. 무전기는 당신이 필요로 하는 순간 고장난다.
The bursting radius of a grenade is always one foot greater than your jumping range. 수류탄의 유효살상범위는 항상 당신이 피한 것보다 살짝 넓다.
The law of the bayonet says the man with the bullet wins. 총검의 법칙 : 탄환 남은 놈이 이긴다.
Precision bombing is normally accurate within plus/minus one mile. 정밀폭격은 보통 한 2km 빗맞으면 잘 맞은 거다.
The side with the fanciest uniforms losses. 제복 멋진 쪽이 진다.
If you are short of everything except enemy, you're in combat. 당신이 적 빼고 모든 게 부족하다면, 당신은 지금 전투중인 것이다.
No plan survives the first few seconds of combat. 작전계획이란 건 도대체 전투 개시 후 몇초 이상 가는 법이 없다.
Ammo is cheap; your life isn't. 탄환은 매우 싸다: 당신 목숨은 안 그렇다.
