"Today we will experiment with a new form called the tandem story. The process is simple. Each person will pair off with the person sitting to his or her immediate right. One of you will then write the first paragraph of a short story. The partner will read the first paragraph and then add another paragraph to the story. The first person will then add a third paragraph, and so on back and forth. Remember to re-read what has been written each time in order to keep the story coherent. There is to be absolutely NO talking and anything you wish to say must be written on the paper. The story is over when both agree a conclusion has been reached."

At first, Laurie couldn't decide which kind of tea she wanted. The chamomile, which used to be her favorite for lazy evenings at home, now reminded her too much of Carl, who once said, in happier times, that he liked chamomile. But she felt she must now, at all costs, keep her mind off Carl. His possessiveness was suffocating, and if she thought about him too much her asthma started acting up again. So chamomile was out of the question.
로리는 무슨 차를 마실지 고민하는 중이었다. 그녀는 한가한 저녁에 마시는 카모일을 좋아했지만, 이번에는 카모일 차를 좋아한다고 말하던 전 애인인 칼을 생각나게 했다. 그녀는 무슨 수를 써서라도 칼을 생각하지 않으려 했다. 그의 소유욕은 언제나 그녀를 불쾌하게만 했을 뿐이다. 그에 대해서 생각하다간 천식 발작이라도 일으킬 지경이었기에 카모일은 제외였다.

he said into his transgalactic communicator.
"Polar orbit established. No sign of resistance so far..."
But before he could sign off, a bluish particle beam flashed out of nowhere and blasted a hole through his ship's cargo bay. The jolt from the direct hit sent him flying out of his seat and across the co*kpit.
한편, 스카이론 4 행성 위를 체공 중인 공격 편대장인 칼 해리스 중사는 1년쯤 전에 만났던 로리라는 골 빈 천식쟁이년과의 뜨거웠던 하룻밤보다 더 중요한 일에 신경을 쓰고 있었다.

그는 은하간 통신기에 대고 말했다.
"극궤도에 진입했다. 아직 적의 저항은 보이지 않는다..."
하지만 그가 말을 끝내기 전에 푸른 입자빔이 어디선가 날아와 선체의 화물칸에 구멍을 뚫었고, 그는 그 충격으로 좌석에서 튕겨나와 조종실 안을 뒹굴었다.

He bumped his head and died almost immediately but not before he felt one last pang of regret for psychically brutalizing the one woman who had ever had feelings for him. Soon afterwards, Earth stopped its pointless hostilities towards the peaceful farmers of Skylon 4. "Congress Passes Law Permanently Abolishing War and Space Travel," Laurie read in her newspaper one morning. The news simultaneously excited her and bored her. She stared out the window, dreaming of her youth, when the days had passed unhurriedly and carefree, with no newspapers to read, no television to distract her from her sense of innocent wonder at all the beautiful things around her.
"Why must one lose one’s innocence to become a woman?"
she pondered wistfully.

Little did she know, but she had less than 10 seconds to live. Thousands of miles above the city, the Anu'udrian mothership launched the first of its lithium fusion missiles. The dim-witted wimpy peaceniks who pushed the Unilateral Aerospace Disarmament Treaty through the congress had left Earth a defenseless target for the hostile alien empires who were determined to destroy the human race. Within two hours after the passage of the treaty the Anu'udrian ships were on course for Earth, carrying enough firepower to pulverize the entire planet. With no one to stop them, they swiftly initiated their diabolical plan. The lithium fusion missile entered the atmosphere unimpeded. The President, in his top-secret Mobile submarine headquarters on the ocean floor off the coast of Guam, felt the inconceivably massive explosion, which vaporized poor, stupid, Laurie and 85 million other Americans. The President slammed his fist on the conference table.
"We can't allow this! I'm going to veto that treaty! Let's blow 'em out of the sky!"
로리는 모르고 있었지만 그녀에겐 10초밖에 살 시간이 남지 않았다. 로리가 사는 도시의 수천 마일 상공에선 아누드리안의 모선이 리튬 핵융합 미사일의 첫 탄막 사격을 개시하고 있었다. 우주 군축법을 만들어낸 국회의 골빈 평화쟁이들은 인류를 멸망시키기로 결정한 적대적인 외계 제국군들에게 지구가 방어할 수단이 하나도 없게 만들어버렸다. 군축법이 국회를 통과하고 난 2시간 뒤 아누드리안 전함들은 전 행성을 초토화시키기 넉넉한 무기를 싣고 지구로 향했다. 그들을 막을 자들은 아무도 없었기에 그들은 즉시 그들의 사악한 계획을 시작했다. 리튬 핵융합 미사일은 아무 방해 없이 대기권을 돌입했다. 괌 해저에 있는 극비리의 이동 잠수함 기지에 숨어있던 대통령은 엄청나게 강력한 폭발을 느낄 수 있었다. 불쌍하고 골빈 로리와 미국인 8천 5백만 명이 죽어가는 소리였다. 대통령은 주먹으로 탁자를 내리쳤다.
"이건 말도 안돼! 군축법은 폐기한다! 외계인들을 다 죽여버리자!"
