Imagine that school is a cult. We can
compare studying to religious worship, and general non-studying endeavors as
secular activities. The act of forcing a student to cut his hair is a penalty
on secular activities. For example, a student with a short haircut cannot fit
in with the more "cooler" factions of his own peers because short
hair is deemed undesirable by the "cool kids" (this may require a
deeper understanding of teen psychology for better analysis).
With
this penalty in mind, we can easily imagine that the costs of short hair, much
like gang tatoos on the face, seriously hamper one's ability to enjoy the
secular parts of life. Thus, the student has no choice but to actively engage
in school activities to maximize his own utility (and that of the group while
he's at it). It is quite unfortunate that the student cannot understand the
deeper mathematical reasoning behind short hair and must curse the boundary
conditions of the universe for his predicament.
