Here are some points surmised from the sneak preview of the book:
World of Azeroth creation, in "The Great Dark", from a titan spirit.
Elementals/Elemental lords like
Al'Akir were the denizens of infant Azeroth.
For many years, Azeroth was a chaotic mess of elemental wars.
You can encounter many of these Elemental lords in WoW such as Ragnaros, Neptulon, and Therazane. You can also learn lots about Titan lore in game, in raids like Ulduar.
Old gods plummeted down from the Great Dark, embedding themselves in the ground.
Ruined the land around them but also expelled organic matter, creating the races Faceless Ones (such as
Yor'sahj the Unsleeping) and the Aqir
This "Black Empire" upset the Elemental lords who joined forces to fight it.
We have encountered a few old gods thus far in game: C'Thun, Yogg-Saron, and, as used by Garrosh Hellscream in Pandaria, Heart of Y'Shaarj.
This produced more sentient races, like
Trolls.
Trolls were a warring faction against the Aqir but needed a secret weapon so they decided to resurrect
Lei Shen the Thunder King
Unfortunately, this didn't pan out (this time) and the
Trolls fled back to their homeland.
Dark trolls generally kept themselves apart from the inter-faction wars of the trolls in Kalimdor.
They were nocturnal and this turned their skin grey.
They longed for a 'peaceful connection to the natural world' unlike other trolls.
Dark trolls gradually migrated to the center of Kalimdor where they discovered what they thought was a lake, the
Well of Eternity.
The energies around the Well transformed the dark trolls into immortal intelligent beings and they began worshiping the moon goddess Elune.
This is the "rise of the night elves"
You can encounter Lei Shen when he IS successfully resurrected in the Throne of Thunder. You can learn more about Troll and Night Elf lore through their respective archaeologiesand lots of literature around the world of Azeroth.
Post-Sundering, the Well of Eternity is gone
This means a source of power for Night Elves was destroyed
Night Elves then fled to
Mount Hyjal after agreeing to prohibit the use of arcane magic
Unfortunately, when they arrived at
Mount Hyjal, they discovered a second, smaller Well of Eternity as well as
Illidan Stormrage next to it. He had reformed the Well out of a vial of the water from the previous well.
This caused strife between the Highbourne and
Illidan Stormrage but some agreed with him that the new Well was necessary to fight the Legion. The others thought it could be used by the Legion as a portal.
After learning about this second well, three Dragon Aspects came to
Mount Hyjal.
Alexstrasza the Life-Binder planted a seed and grew a tree over the Well in order to hide it. This was known as the Great World Tree, or, Nordrassil.
Ysera blessed the tree , binding it and all night elf druids to the Emerald Dream (
Ysera's Realm) allowing them to travel to it at will.
Nozdormu blessed the tree, so as long as it remained standing, night elves would be immortal.
In Cataclysm, Night Elves slowly started reclaiming some arcane magic which allowed them to train as Mages (and allowed players to play Night Elf Mages)
